Palladian Bridge reflected in the water.

Nestled on the slopes overlooking the picturesque city of Bath, Prior Park Landscape Garden is a masterpiece of 18th-century design. Created by Ralph Allen, a wealthy entrepreneur and philanthropist, the garden is a harmonious blend of natural beauty and exquisite craftsmanship.

Allen was a close friend of the poet Alexander Pope, who is said to have had a significant influence on the garden's design. Pope's emphasis on naturalism and informality is evident throughout the garden, with its winding paths, meandering streams, and carefully placed trees and shrubs.

One of the most striking features of the garden is the Palladian Bridge, a magnificent stone structure that spans the lake. The bridge is one of only four of its kind in the world, and it is considered to be one of the finest examples of Palladian architecture in England.

In addition to the bridge, the garden also features a number of other notable structures, including the Belvedere, a folly that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, and the Grotto, a subterranean passageway that is decorated with shells, minerals, and fossils.

Prior Park Landscape Garden is a haven of tranquility, a place where visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. The garden is a testament to the vision and artistry of its creators, and it continues to inspire and delight visitors from all over the world.

Tips for Visitors

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: The garden is set on a steep hillside with paths that can be uneven, gravel, or muddy, so comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.

  • Use Public Transport or Walk: There is no general visitor parking on-site. The garden is located about a mile up a steep hill (up to a 25% incline) from Bath city centre. You can take the Number 2 bus from Dorchester Street in Bath, which stops near the entrance. Be prepared for a strenuous 45-minute uphill walk from the city centre if you choose to go on foot.

  • Go Early for Tranquility: Visiting early in the morning, right at the 10:00 AM opening time, is the best way to avoid crowds, enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere, and capture photos of the iconic Palladian Bridge with better light.

  • Know the Route: The suggested walking route is a loop designed to minimise the impact of the steep slope: you walk down a steep path to the Palladian Bridge and lakes, and then take a different, curving path back up to the entrance, which is less strenuous. The full circuit takes about 60–90 minutes without long stops.

  • Check Tea Cabin Hours: The Tea Cabin, located near the lower entrance, serves hot drinks, snacks, and cake but often closes an hour before the garden, generally around 4:00 PM.

  • Accessibility Note: Due to the very steep paths, the garden is generally unsuitable for wheelchairs and mobility vehicles beyond the top area near the visitor reception. Limited accessible parking for Blue Badge holders is available, but you must call ahead to pre-book a space.

  • Bring Your Dog (on a lead): Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the garden but must be kept on a short lead at all times. Be aware that cattle may graze in the Pasture area between April and November, which restricts dog access in that specific field.

  • Combine with the Bath Skyline Walk: The garden runs alongside a portion of the six-mile circular Bath Skyline walk, making it easy to extend your walking day for more panoramic city views.
